Connecting Gifted Pre-College Students with Quality Research Mentors

We connect students with research mentors from both academia and industry, helping them secure summer internships tailored to their interests and capabilities. Dr. Xue ensures the quality of our mentors and the compatibility of personalities and working styles to create the best possible match.

Students begin by submitting applications, followed by a careful screening and interview. Once accepted, Dr. Xue will guide them through exploring various fields of interest, help them connect with potential mentors, and provide ongoing coaching and mentorship as they embark on their research journeys. Her role will be that of a “professional mentor”, complementing the guidance provided by their future “academic mentor”. Unfortunately, not all academic mentors are well-equipped to support professional development, which is why our joint mentorship model is so essential.

This approach is inspired by Dr. Xue’s experience as an NSF-funded postdoctoral researcher. During her training, she had three official mentors: a math mentor who is a member of the National Academy of Sciences, a past president of the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM) and the Society for Mathematical Biology (SMB), and the founding director of an NSF-funded National Institute, the Mathematical Biosciences Institute (MBI); a biology mentor who was the Dean of the Medical School at the Ohio State University; and a professional mentor who was an NSF Career Awardee and associate director of MBI. In addition to these mentors, she received invaluable guidance from numerous department chairs, institute directors, school deans, and society presidents, both at the Ohio State University and internationally. Ohio State was once known as 'The Oxford of Mathematical Biology' in the United States. All of these experiences contributed to her national awards, including the NSF Career Award and the PECASE Award, which was issued by the White House for her research and educational program.
